The Blueridge Myths

“The Blueridge Myths” use Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and Carol S. Pearson’s 12 archetypes as points of departure. Currently my Hero’s Journey is divided into 11 stage where I explore each archetype hoping to uncover some truth. I draw on biographical elements, art historical references and direct observation.

1. Halcyon Days series

The halcyon days of childhood are a time of curiosity and learning. A time filled with optimism and trust as one begins the hero’s journey.

2. Rebel Just Because series

The Orphan years are a time when peers become more important than parents. A time of rebellion, a moving away from parents — sometimes gently, sometimes not. No matter how it is done, it is a very necessary step towards independence.

3. Voyage of Discovery series

The Warrior sets out on a voyage of discovery. He or she is facing the greatest of all fears — the fear of the unknown. This is the time to explore and experiment; a time to leave the family home and move out into the world.

4. Because I Care series

This is the time of learning to care for others as well as ourselves (sometimes instead of). This can be raising children or caring for an aged parent. It is a time when self becomes less important than others.

5. Citizens of the World series

This is the world of the seeker, the explorer, the wanderer. A time of travel abroad learning about the world, new cultures, exotic places and spirituality.

6. Ship of Fools series

This is the world of the Lover and relationships. It is a time of heartbreak and drama, pleasure and intimacy and the all consuming search for love.

7. Lives of Quiet Desperation series

This is the journey to the innermost cave and includes all self-destructive behaviours (additions, compulsions or activities that undermine intimacy, career success or self-esteem). It is a time of turmoil, crisis, disenchantment and resignation as well as loneliness, loss and grief.

8. Lost & Found series

Having made it through the tumultuous years of relationships, it is time to take responsibility for our own lives. It is time to look at what worked and what didn’t and in doing so, gain new wisdom.

9. Strange People Queer Notions series

This series celebrates the creative spirit. What if anything was possible?

10. Age of Diminished Expectations series

This is the world of the Magician and the road back. A time to think about retirement and reinventing oneself. A time to come to terms with reality.

11. Place of No Regrets series

This is the world of the Sage and resurrection. The hero has survived and been transformed by the experience. He or she becomes wise and sees the world and oneself objectively.
